As the Red Sea crisis shows signs of easing with a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the shipping industry faces a precarious landscape. Houthi forces have pledged to cease attacks on most vessels transiting the Red Sea, targeting only those flying Israeli flags or owned by Israeli entities. While this could reopen the Red Sea and Suez Canal as viable routes, skepticism lingers about the longevity of the ceasefire and the Houthis’ commitment.

Analysts highlight several challenges ahead. Container shipping capacity, which surged due to Cape of Good Hope reroutes in 2024, may face overcapacity if Red Sea routes reopen. Drewry estimates a 25% capacity surplus in container shipping, which could lead to a collapse in freight rates. With 85% of Far East-Europe and 90% of other container trades currently diverted, a full return to pre-crisis routes would require time, safety assurances, and extensive adjustments to shipping schedules.

Despite hopes for a smoother trade environment, shipping lines like Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd remain cautious, preferring to await greater ceasefire stability before resuming Red Sea transits. Insurance providers are also taking a measured approach, with adjustments likely lagging behind any changes in shipping patterns.

The stakes are high for global logistics, as overcapacity could drive down demand for container shipping and create ripple effects across supply chains. However, the possibility of resumed Red Sea transits also offers relief from the extended voyages and congestion of alternative routes.
